Affecting Factors of the Sealing Performance of Flange Gaskets
Affecting factors of the sealing performance of flange gaskets

1) Gasket performance
Gaskets are an important component of sealing used to seal the gap between two flange sealing surfaces and prevent fluid leakage. Gaskets containing non-metallic and metallic gaskets are used to expand the distance between the gasket surface and the flange sealing surface and to achieve elasticity between the gasket surface and the flange surface. Necessary elastic deformation needs to be generated under appropriate force. When selecting gasket materials, it is also necessary to consider the working medium and temperature. The width of the gasket is also an important factor affecting the sealing performance, and the width of the gasket is also an important factor affecting the sealing performance.

2) Sealing surface type
The contact surface that plays a sealing role with the flange gasket is called the flange sealing surface or compression surface. The selection of sealing surface type is related to the shell, leakage results, and gasket performance. The shape and surface properties of the flange sealing surface play an important role in sealing. The flatness of the flange sealing surface and the perpendicularity between the sealing surface and the flange center line play an important role in sealing. It should directly affect the stress uniformity of the gasket and the roughness of the flange sealing surface in good contact with the flange, meeting the requirements of the gasket. The surface should be free of wounds or surface cracks.

3) Flange rigidity
Excessive warping deformation caused by insufficient flange rigidity is mostly one of the main reasons for poor fastening and sealing of bolt flanges in actual production. High-rigidity flanges have small deformation and can evenly transmit the force of bolts to the gasket. The rigidity of flange flanges is related to various factors. Increasing the size of the conical neck can increase the bending resistance of the flange. However, in principle, if the rigidity of the flange is not increased, it will increase the rigidity of the flange.

4) Control conditions
The influence of pressure, temperature, and the physical and chemical properties of the medium on sealing performance is complex. Simple pressure and medium have little effect on sealing. Under the combined action of temperature, especially at fluctuating high temperatures, sealing performance is severely affected and fails due to fatigue. At high temperatures, the medium has low viscosity, high permeability, and is prone to leakage. The corrosive effect of the medium on gaskets and flanges intensifies, increasing the likelihood of leakage. Therefore, flanges, bolts, and gaskets undergo significant high-temperature creep and stress relaxation, damaging the seal.

Advantages of flange sealing gaskets

1. Wide temperature range for use
2. Good resistance and softness
3. Capable of withstanding low temperatures, good heat resistance, and good electrical insulation performance
4. Non-polluting medium, and high sealing reliability
5. Good compressibility, resilience, good sealing, and no need for precision machining on the surface
6. Easy to use, affordable, and with a wide range of usage pressures
