Materials Selection of Low-Temperature Flange Gaskets

1. Materials Selection of Sealing Gaskets

There are various types of flange gaskets, which can be broadly categorized into three groups based on their material properties: metal gaskets, metal-nonmetal composite gaskets, and nonmetal gaskets. According to their functions, they can be classified as low-temperature-resistant gaskets, reliable sealing gaskets, and corrosion-resistant gaskets.

2. Low-Temperature Resistance Performance

Commonly used materials for low-temperature gaskets include polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), silicone, and fluororubber. Among these, PTFE exhibits excellent low-temperature resistance and can withstand temperatures below -200°C, while fluororubber and silicone have relatively weaker low-temperature resistance, typically enduring temperatures around -60°C.

3. Sealing Reliability

When selecting materials for low-temperature flange gaskets, in addition to considering their low-temperature resistance, it is also essential to evaluate their sealing reliability. Generally, materials with a low friction coefficient, minimal compression deformation, and good recovery properties are preferred to ensure effective sealing performance. For example, PTFE is widely used as a low-temperature gasket material due to its excellent sealing properties.

4. Corrosion Resistance Performance

During the use of low-temperature gaskets, corrosion issues may arise due to exposure to different media. Therefore, it is crucial to select the appropriate gasket material based on the properties of the medium. For instance, when dealing with acidic or alkaline media, PTFE or fluororubber is typically chosen due to their superior corrosion resistance.
