Types and Applications of Flange Gaskets

What Are Flange Gaskets? Where Are They Used?

There are many types of flange gaskets, and the following are some common flange gaskets and their applicable situations.

1. Industrial rubber: it includes natural rubber, nitrile rubber, chloroprene rubber, etc. Natural rubber is suitable for media such as water, seawater, and air. Nitrile rubber is suitable for petroleum products. Chloroprene rubber is suitable for media such as seawater, weak acids, and weak bases. These rubber gaskets are usually used for pipelines, manholes, handholes, etc., with a pressure generally not exceeding 1.568MPa.

2. Asbestos rubber sheets: It has a low price and is easy to use, but there is a problem with trace penetration. In some high-temperature oil media, carbonization and strength reduction may occur in the later stage of use. In the heated state, its usage pressure depends on the strength retention rate of the material. Asbestos rubber sheets are not suitable for use in non-oily media.

3. Graphite gaskets: it is made of soft graphite and suitable for high-temperature and highly corrosive media. It is commonly used for high-temperature and high-pressure valves.

4. Metal gaskets: there are mainly octagonal and elliptical gaskets, tooth shaped gaskets, lens gaskets, and other types. Metal gaskets are suitable for flange sealing surfaces such as trapezoidal groove, concave convex, lens, etc. Its materials include pure iron, ultra soft steel, stainless steel, aluminum, etc. The sealing surface processing accuracy and surface roughness of metal gaskets require high precision, and the bolt clamping force is also relatively large.

5. Metal coated graphite gaskets: it is made of thin metal coated circular asbestos gasket. It is suitable for valves with higher temperatures and pressures.

6. Spiral wound gaskets: It is made by mixing and winding waveform metal tape and sealing material tape. There are various types, such as steel strip asbestos, steel strip polytetrafluoroethylene, steel strip flexible graphite, etc. Spiral wound gaskets are suitable for concave convex flange sealing surfaces and are commonly used for medium pressure valves at higher temperatures.

7. PTFE gaskets: It is generally used for mortise and tenon sealing surfaces, and there are mainly two materials: PTFE and fiberglass PTFE. It is suitable for highly corrosive media of various pressures at lower temperatures.

8. Asbestos rubber gaskets: it is suitable for smooth, concave convex, tenon groove and other flange sealing surfaces. Its advantages are good corrosion resistance and thermal stability, good plasticity, and the ability to ensure sealing with minimal compression force. But its strength is low and it is easy to stick to the flange sealing surface.

When selecting flange gaskets, it is necessary to consider factors such as the properties of the medium, temperature, pressure, as well as the sealing surface type of the flange and the performance characteristics of the gasket. At the same time, it is necessary to follow relevant standards and specifications to ensure that the selection and use of gaskets meet the requirements.
